Joanna Briscoe is the author of the novels Mothers and Other Lovers, which won the Betty Trask Award; Skin; Sleep With Me, which was published in eleven countries and adapted for ITV by Andrew Davies; You, which was published by Bloomsbury in the UK, USA and through Europe, and Touched, which was published by Arrow.
Her latest novel, The Seduction, was published by Bloomsbury UK and USA. Her short stories have appeared in many anthologies.
Maggie O’Farrell said that, 'Joanna Briscoe writes with elegance and passion about the clashes, misunderstandings and silences between generations.' 'Her prose is beguilingly good,' wrote Elizabeth Day in the Observer. Joanna works as a literary critic for the Guardian and has written for all the major national newspapers. She also broadcasts on Radio 4, and has taught for the Arvon Foundation, and for the Birkbeck and City MA degrees in Creative Writing.
Joanna has been a tutor on Faber Academy’s flagship Writing a Novel course for eleven years and has seen many of her students’ novels published, including the bestselling Saara El-Arifi, Kate Maxwell, Nick Clark Windo, Smita Bhide, Melanie Cantor and Maxine Mei-Fung Chung.
Joanna is completely passionate about finding talent and developing students’ novels. The whole process is endlessly rewarding and exciting to her, and each class provides new voices and new joys. Her teaching style is very much tethered to the individual novel that each student is working on, rather than more general exercises.
She enjoys a relaxed but lively style in the classroom, encouraging rigorous but sensitive critiquing, and sets weekly word length deadlines according to each student’s needs and wishes. Her students tend to carry on meeting as a group for years after the course finishes, and these creative communities continue to support published writers.
